Safe Space
It’s nice when a plan works out. I moved a salvia greggi and a passel of bulbs yesterday in anticipation of rain. Rain came. It is falling at this moment. And it is falling slow and steady. It will soak the ground. The bulbs will settle into their new homes as will the salvia, concentrating on roots for the winter. Saving themselves for spring and the time of blooms and new growth.
The spot I picked for them is the new spot in the enlarged garden beneath the big oaks. I can see them from my kitchen window. They will get more of the morning sun, and hints of the late afternoon sun. It will be cool in summer. It is an easy spot to water if watering is needed. The rain barrels are close at hand, and I have a nice watering can. I used it all summer on the remaining Maria Pavia rose, which is doing well and getting ready for the winter, too.
And this is the ground beneath my feet unto which I will shrink in the coming days. Drawing the world in around me. I have plans for all the gardens. New mulch in the back. Some lavender. Mulch by the trellis which is looking forlorn these days. I’ll rework the wildflower garden, enlarging it. There’s path work to do, too, and the sumacs are coming out. Of course, I will keep my eyes open for strange beasts, because you never know what’s lurking in the shadows. In the meantime, I’m counting on the magic of the garden to defend me and bring me peace.
