Weather Day

Rain. Nice. Soft rain, too. The rain barrel that was nearly empty yesterday is now full. It would be good if it fell all day, but I have a feeling it’s a short term thing. That’s the pattern for most of our recent rains. The storms develop, and most of the rain falls to our east. Seems consistent with the studies showing that divide between humid east and dry west, which once stood at the 100th meridian has now pushed east to the 98th. If it holds, one day central Texas will look like today’s West Texas, dry and arid.

Of course, being a human in geologic time means that for most of us the world will look remarkably consistent and unchanged even as we stand in valley’s carved by floods over millions of years, seemingly unaware that this is an ongoing process. I guess that’s the beauty of being human. We’re here for such a short time that everything always feels more or less permanent, which probably explains why people who live by rivers are always surprised when the rivers flood.

Enough of that, however. The rain is falling, and my plants are getting a good drink, and later this morning I’ll see about picking up another cedar post so that I can continue the work on my pump house shed. It will be a good time to dig a post hole in rain softened dirt on a day made cooler by rain and clouds. Of course, it will mean I have to tote a bag of cement, but work is meant to be hard, that’s why it’s work, and if you want nice things you have to make an effort.
