Work in Progress
The pump house is coming along. It turns out I have more tin than I imagined. Plus, I’m making do with what I have so, old fence slats are filling in where needed. Today, I’ll go pick up some additional lumber and see what I can do about putting up the back wall and getting started on the roof. The latter is the tricky bit, especially for a part-time carpenter and the part-time is every 20 years or so. I have a vague idea what to do which is why I’m going slow.
The tin in question came off my work room that got a new roof courtesy of hail and insurance. It sure looks nice, and the new gutters work like a dream. My new building by comparison will look a little tatty I’m afraid, but there will be a fence between it and the yard and the buildings with new roofs. I’ll do my best to make it feel like it’s a worthwhile country building and has nothing to be ashamed of just because those other guys had insurance and people who knew what they were doing putting on the roofs.
There’s an odd satisfaction that comes from building something when you need it, doing it yourself with your own two hands. Sometimes it’s something to brag about, but usually it’s simply functional and that’s really the point, I guess. Now that the shed is going up, I can see it might be a nice place to hang tools, and I’ll probably dress out the walls inside, and maybe even put doors on it, and hang a light. And it always will be a work in progress, like me, not much to look at, but functional, with promise, even though it’s made of odd bits past their prime.
