A Better Life

To me, this election is about my vision of America. Kind, considerate, gentle, caring. The sort of country that brings electricity to the rural poor, creates a program to provide social security for the less affluent, provides affordable medical care for everyone, protects the rights of all against the depredations of the inconsiderate and hateful. Basically, a country that as it does for my brothers and sisters, so too does it do for me.

People talk a lot about self-interest that it’s inherently selfish and self-centered, and sometimes it is. I know people who think I’ve got mine and too bad about you, people who think that’s just the way of the world, there are have’s and have not’s and why should I care. Well, I think we should care about others because in caring we build a network of caring so that in our time of need, if it should come, there will be others to help us, people who remember what we did for them and pay it back because it’s not always about money.

We are a wealthy country. There is no doubt about that. We are resourceful, smart and blessed with a wealth of natural resources. There is no reason every citizen shouldn’t have a good life with all that we have, especially since so many of us follow a religion that says, love they neighbor as thyself. And I guess that’s why I follow the path blazed by Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson and Obama, men who did for others and loved their neighbors, and it’s why I think it’s time for a sister to have a shot at making this a better world.
