Getting Better
Spent a few chill hours on the golf course yesterday. We got around in under four hours, which is how the game of golf is meant to be played. My score was high because my putting and chipping was it’s usual unglamorous self. I mostly rocked it off the tee and going down the fairway, but when it came time for precision, no precision was found. At least I know where to look when it comes to assessing blame. I have met the enemy, and it is I.
There was a time when my wonky pitching and chipping and ball striking would leave me infuriated, but gradually I came to realize I had only myself and lack of practice to blame. So, I took lessons and practiced, and I improved in a lot of areas, and my scores improved, but the short game is still a mystery yet to be solved. Luckily, I don’t think it’s too late to make improvements despite having a half century of really bad swing thoughts cataloged in my brain.
So, I have decided that 2025 will be the year of the short game. I may even take a lesson or two. And I’m counting on my aging memory to forget some of the old stuff and get excited about the new stuff. And that doesn’t feel like too much of an ask. My brain already forgets a lot of stuff so it seems only fair that it start forgetting some of the golf history. After all, if I’m regressing back to my childhood, it seems right and just to get a second chance at becoming a better golfer.
