Heavenly Thoughts
My back’s feeling better these days, but my soul’s still a little sore. It feels as though some people want this election to be about God because there’s a lot of bible thumping going on. Personally, I’ve always fallen into the render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s camp which I’ve always felt meant the two domains were separate and that the separation between religion and government was even written into our constitution.
And, in any case, I’ve always preferred not to be ruled by religious zealots. It just never seems to play out in the long run. They don’t seem to have a great deal of tolerance, and they always find the weirdest things upsetting. Some don’t want to dance. Some don’t want to drink. Some don’t want to cut their hair. And they’re really big on killing those who don’t share their beliefs. Shias and Sunnis. Hindus and Muslims. Protestants and Catholics. Arabs and Jews. It’s a long list.
Heck, even the so called pro-life movement thought it was okay to kill doctors who performed abortions and did. So, not so pro-life, just pro their cause. But appreciating irony has never been the hallmark of extremism of any stripe. Take the Weathermen back in the 60s, who wanted to stop the Vietnam war by bombing buildings. I don’t care how or what people worship, they just do it on their own time and don’t insist we all do it. They can pick their path to heaven, and I’ll pick mine.
