Delta Dawn

There’s a golden glow over the pasture and the hills beyond. A light fog is lit by the morning sun. Seems a peaceful way to start the day. Plus, it’s cool. We missed the Delta rain, but poor Louisiana got it again. I bet there aren’t any blue tarps left in Lake Charles. Relatives in Crowley are safe but without power. I like naming storms after the Greek alphabet. I vote we start using that all the time, as an educational tool. We could just add the year to make it specific, e.g. Delta2020.

Think of all the discussions we could have about Greek literature, history, and early Christianity. What fun. But it won’t happen, it would sound too much like work. On a side note, when I was in the seminary in high school, they divided our classes into two groups, Chi and Rho. I thought that was pretty cool and I liked the symbolism. According to the dictionary, the Chi Rho is one of the earliest forms of christogram, formed by superimposing the first two letters—chi and rho —of the Greek word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Kristos/Christ) in such a way that the vertical stroke of the rho intersects the center of the chi.

That was then and this is now, and I obviously didn’t complete my seminary education. I did get a good love of literature out of it, and it was the first place where something I wrote made people laugh. There’s nothing like patting a kid on the back to make him think he’s good at something. It stuck and here I am, nearly 60 years later, writing a few words every morning, and feeling good about it, having made a living putting words on paper and moving them around. I guess things just work out.
