I Have Mail

Every once in a while, you have to wrestle with the gods of the internet. I had my bout yesterday. I have a website and the company where I register that website provides me with an email service for that website. I recently noticed said email service was no longer working. I investigated. Turns out, the company handling the email service changed some things behind the scenes. They took everything to the cloud. They probably told me what was going to happen, and I most likely missed it. Email is no longer central to my retired life.

It took me two days, two long chats, two calls, and me poking around on their website to finally get it right thanks to some really nice fellows who most likely live in India. But I did and suddenly everything works. I’m getting emails on my all my devices through all my interfaces. Once again, I feel like a 21st century guy. I am connected. Servers, ports, encryption protocols are all lined up. Packets are flowing. The digital river runs through me.

But, as always, I am now thinking about the fragility of this fine digital world in which we live. Because it only works if we keep the lights on and the satellites keep flying. If either or both stop, we are literally dead in the water. Amazon may be a giant, but it’s life blood is electricity. No juice. No Prime. And now I’m beginning to sound like a prepper. But I think it’s probably a good idea, every once in a while, to remember that we are of the earth and that we can, actually, clothe and feed ourselves and function is way more important than form.
