New Memories

I’ve been without central heat since December 6 thanks to a fan that went kaput. I couldn’t get a service call until the following Monday. Then they had to order the fan. It’s here now and will be installed this morning. I had a little more than a week to remember what it was like in the early days of my marriage, 50 plus years ago, when space heaters were the thing, and nights were spent under mountains of quilts. It was a nice trip down memory lane, but I’m ready for my modern conveniences.

Of course, those memories got me thinking about other memories and how memories that once meant a lot because they were so pleasant, are now just dry husks of pleasures experienced but gone. My house is full of things calling up that sort of memory—CDs, albums, David Winter homes, old music posters, game tickets, concert tickets, books, and pictures. And then that led me to remember how memories can be a trap that catch you in the past and stop you from making new memories; think of all those people you know who live in their glory days, missing them, yearning for them.

Yes. I’ve lived a good life and done a lot of fun things, but I’m pretty sure there’s more to come. For instance, my new passport arrived yesterday. I have multiple friends living in England and the Netherlands who might like to see me, and there’s Mexico when I go to Terlingua in February. A friend wants to drive to Alaska and still another friend has got me thinking about 14,000 foot mountains. And I’ll probably go to Colorado to record some of my music this year. It all sounds like fun and something to possibly cherish one day, but in the meantime it’s simply the juice that gets me up in the morning and helps me move on down the road to new adventures, to new memories.
