One Step Closer

Water over the low-water bridge.

Muggy morning. Boo. I prefer cool and crisp. It’s good though. The general consensus is that a month of rain saturating the ground might make for a cool July. I can live with that. Meanwhile the grass continues to grow and I’m beginning to feel like a maintenance man at a golf course, mowing every day. Well, not every day, but nearly. Which is fine because I like doing it.

I think it’s a hangover from my days as a suburban dad, when your yard was the visible sign to your neighbors you had it all together. And I had no problem playing that game. Heck, I dressed up everyday in coat and tie. That continued right up until casual Friday became casual every day, and people started wearing jeans to church, which signaled to me that lack of respect was about to become a hallmark of our society. I still embraced polo shirts at work. And jeans.

But back to the grass. It’s growing to beat the band as is everything. Which is nice and really fills out the yard. The deep summer plants like the turks caps are yet to bloom, but they need heat. The rock rose has finally started showing signs of life as are the crape myrtles. It won’t be long before the latter are covered in blooms followed by my driveway which is the final resting place of their flowers. That will finally signal summer, and from there it will be a slow walk to fall and the next breath of cool air.
