Still Working
And the week begins, although it really started yesterday, because Sunday is the first day of the week. But most of us these days think of weeks in terms of work, and this is the first workday. And, of course, there are the exceptions, farmers and ranchers, where the work is never done, and goes on in a continuous stream. But these days if you get into management, the work never ends there, either. It goes on and on and on, courtesy of our perpetual connectivity.
I’m glad I escaped that universe although, when you think about it, life goes on and on an on, and thanks to our perpetual connectivity there isn’t really any downtime, because that’s now part of our job, telling people what we’re doing in our downtime. In a sense, I guess, we’re working for free for those social media giants generating data, and in most cases having fun doing it. Ah, that feels weird.
In a sense, I’m a monkey pushing a button on my screen, posting pictures, and telling people where I am, and getting a little reward in terms of likes and loves. And the guy running the experiment is tabulating the data and selling it to people who are then selling stuff to me and them. What’s odd is I enjoy seeing stuff that I like and discovering new things, even if they are things I want to buy. And it is actually a digital community where I hang out with my friends, and I like that, too. So, I guess you could say I’m a willing participant, and enjoy working for free. I mean this is the 21st century and if I’m going to live in it, I might as well be all in.
