The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

Memory Tricks
I love summer. I got home yesterday following lunch and an afternoon of music with time to mow. So, I did. I changed into my work clothes and fired up the zero turn mower.

Memory Maker
For the last several days I’ve been grandpa in residence, getting the kids up in the morning and off to their summer care programs.
Reunion 2
The final reunion is in the books. Anything we do going forward will be informal. I suspect there will be some of those.

Memory Loss
I spent the first week post-surgery on the first floor of my daughter’s house. No driving or stair climbing. Most of my time was dedicated to walking around, sitting, staring at my phone, and sleeping.
Mental Test
Took a mental acuity test as part of my annual wellness physical. I passed. The nurse said I was as sharp as a tack. Not sure that’s a real medical definition, but it felt good.

If Memory Serves
If you’d like a good example of how faulty memory can be. I have an example for you.

Look Out
I fell to earth yesterday. My three good days took a hit. It happened in the afternoon. I was looking at social media and realized I’d missed a Monday evening event to which I was invited.

Trip Log 5
Captain’s Log Stardate 2022.2.5. The cold persists. The music endures. The companionship maintains.

The Upside
If there’s an upside to winter and long dark nights. It’s cool air and long dark nights.

A Ball in a Box
Talk about old habits. On the anniversary of my wife’s death, I decided to remove my wedding band. It’s been well over a week, yet I find myself reaching down to absentmindedly fiddle with the ring.
Lost
I had something to say, yesterday. Now I can’t remember what it was. Dang.
Playing Again
Spring is like the movie you love to watch over and over, with every appearance a director’s cut so that there is always something new to see.
Saying Goodbye, Saying Hello
I closed a bank account the other day, actually a credit union account. Seems an inconsequential and rather ordinary thing to do.
