The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

When the Waters Come
When the waters come, mountains bow down before it. When the waters come, shorelines turn their back and recede.
Tree Thoughts
We’ve had a wet spring and early summer. Everything that likes water is getting water. I’m cautiously optimistic we might make it to fall without losing anything.
On Tap
We had a quiet day yesterday. Drove to Balmorhea. Floated in the big pool. Drove back. Napped. Went to visit friends. There was music.
Content
Yesterday evening in my pool, as I floated on my back, I was looking up into the clear blue Texas sky. The only things to see were a waxing gibbous moon, and a solitary buzzard floating on a thermal, wings extended.
Yard Care
Last year I let my little Tif yard get away from me. It’s really the only bit of manicured grass I have. It was planted at the behest of my late wife.
Simple Pleasures
Woke up to lightning and thunder, way off in the distance. Checked the weather radar and sure enough a storm may touch us. May. You know how weather goes.
Big Thought
The wind is still howling this morning. Knocking the trees around and just generally being a nuisance. There’s a good chance it will rain today. But I’ve been there before. And when you’re in a time of drought, it can be a cruel hoax.
River Walk
Walked along the banks of a river yesterday, down into the canyon it’s been cutting for millions of years. The canyon was impressive.
Wondering
After a day and night of music on Saturday, I took Sunday off. Slept in. Didn’t write. It felt good. I used to take the entire weekend off. I may go back to that.
Drink Up
The sweet smell of rain is hanging in the cool air this morning. The grass sparkles with dew. Everything looks soft and alive. Makes me miss the Gulf Coast where moisture is in the air every day.
Ready to Launch
Yesterday was another good day in the yard.
