Time Keeping

I’m in Marathon. In the silence of the morning, I can hear the train whistling its way through town. A long call in the dark night warning the unexpecting. Our house is just behind the park. It’s an easy walk to the tracks and the music venues I’ll be frequenting this week. I’m here with four companions. They’re all boon. People with whom I enjoy spending time.

Speaking of time, we have some before the music starts. We’re going to enjoy the countryside. There’s talk today of going into the park because Big Bend is like a planet with it’s own gravitational pull. When you’re close it wants you and it’s hard to think of anything else. Although tonight some of us will go look at stars at the McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, another attractor with its own special pull. And tomorrow, we’re off to the oasis of Balmorhea.

I love being in this neck of the woods. I was a long time coming to it, but now that I’m here I’m captured. Time literally slows down or seems to. At some point I’ll put on my West Texas Cloud Appreciation shirt and spend my time time looking up and out and around. Seeing as far as my eyes can see. Soaking in the landscape, the big beast sleeping beneath my feet. Thinking that my time is not it’s time but I’m glad we’re sharing even though I know it will have no memory of me as it trundles off into the future to become whatever it will become.
