Winter’s Coming

On a chill morning like today, I enjoy standing outside, feeling the air on my skin, drinking my coffee and looking at the gray clouds attempting to fill the sky. It gives me hope that winter might be on the way. I enjoy winter, at least as it exists in Texas. Mostly cool, and sometimes really cold, but mostly cool. I’ve read forecasts, however, that this coming winter might be the warmest winter on record. That might be okay. It will still be winter and cooler than a July day although what that might mean for next July is anyone’s guess.

Of course, if I was homeless, I’d probably welcome the news. And I’ve had homelessness on my mind for some reason. I think it happened because of all the activity around the newly homeless in North Carolina and Tennessee following Hurricane Helene and how much effort is going into helping them and I wondered why victims of personal storms don’t get the same level of help. There are resources available, but in Texas its illegal for homeless people to live here. We might not be able to solve their problems but maybe we could help them in a more organized fashion and not make criminals out of them.

Oh, well that’s a problem for brighter minds than mine. Still, it’s something to think about as if there’s not enough to think about already. And maybe that’s why it’s low on people’s horizons. There’s a lot to think about already and I imagine most people are simply concentrating on getting through the day, putting food on the table, and wondering why their kids are being such jerks. Oh, and maybe they have a job they don’t like and maybe they’re worried about becoming homeless themselves. So, maybe the top ten percent of the US population, who has close to seventy percent of the nations wealth, could offer a solution. They seem to have plenty of time and money.
