Work Thoughts

Nuts. It looks as though Beryl is going to drop it’s rain on east Texas. Bad news for the Highland Lakes. Of course, now I have to worry about my kids in the greater Houston area. But that’s what dad’s do, worry about their kids. We did get some rain yesterday and may we’ll get some again today. It is odd during the first week of July to see a green lawn, but there it is, and I’ll take it.

Meanwhile, I’m still in yardwork mode. I actually enjoy it, turning the weedy and overrun into something semi-organized and luscious. This is no English garden, with everything in it’s place, but it’s a garden and it’s being tended and there’s a purpose. Understory trees shade the trunks of the big trees, random plants trade nutrients with the soil, and everyone lives in harmony. I’m still after bindweed, but that’s to be expected. Meanwhile, there are lots of flowers.

It is, however, the time of the seasons when work ceases for me at noon. I can no longer bear the burden of heat. Or maybe, I simply don’t want too. I did it the other day when I worked on the fence, and I think my shirt is still wet. But I moved slow and drank my water, and all was well. So, maybe the heat is simply a convenient excuse for me to come inside. And what does it really matter? I’m fairly certain I can do what I will in my yard and no one will be the wiser or even much care.
