Dread Not

It’s a cold crisp morning in the Hill Country. The air is clear, not a cloud in the sky. The presidential election didn’t go my way, but the sun has come up every morning since and gone down as well. I’m disappointed, but it isn’t the first time, nor will it be the last. It’s just the universe breathing in and breathing out. I did my bit, I voted, and I spoke out. Now I’m going to do what most Americans do, trust the country to our elected leaders, and sink back into my daily life.

And this is my daily life, writing about what I see and what I do. Mostly it is stuff close at hand, although on occasion I look up and see the larger world and try to make sense of it and see what I can learn. Afterall, I’ve grown accustomed to the idea of being an adult learner, a man seeking understanding on his way to the grave and trying to make himself a better man in the process. Generally speaking, it’s how I find fulfillment.

As hobbies go, it’s pretty affordable. Mostly it involves books and being curious. Luckily, its pretty much what I’ve done all my life as I shuttled around the country and read. I’ve encountered ideas, picked them up, weighed them, found some attractive, and some wanting. I’ve kept the ones I thought had value and discarded the others and learned to not be overly attached to ones I have because you never know when a new piece of information will show up. So far it’s been a fun trip, and I think I still have a ways to go because when I step back and take a critical look at myself, I see some missing pieces and I wonder how I might go about filling them.
