The Day

We got a semi-big rain last night. By my gauge, it was nearly half an inch. My new roof appears to work as do the new gutters which now shed water at all four corners of the house. The morning air is cool, and the cats were quick to gather as I brought out their daily vittles. The country goes to the polls today and I’ve heard that fifty percent of the people who voted in 2020 have already voted so that bodes well for democracy.

I’ve also spent the last ten days or so speaking my piece. As an old salesman, I’ve done my best to say why I think the product I have to offer is good, but sometimes I feel it’s fair to say things like, “smoking will kill you” or “too much drink is bad for your health.” It seems just a fair warning of a foreseen danger. But I know from practical experience people still smoke, people still drink, and you can rationalize almost anything if desire is strong enough.

For me, there’s an uncomfortable darkness about the Republican candidate this year, and I don’t feel he has the best interests of the Republic at heart. His unwillingness to admit defeat in 2020 seemed to prove that. And it’s why this year, I support the multi-racial woman, our current vice-president and former DA who seems to have a song in her heart and comes speaking of joy and hope. Of course, I realize for others there is something to fear in even that. It’s a puzzle for sure, but by the end of the evening today we’ll have a good idea how the country feels. In the end, I have faith our democracy will find a way, even though I know Rome started out as a republic, change is the way of life, and it’s not always for the best.
