Golf Day

I had a lovely day on the golf course yesterday. We got off early. Had the course mostly to ourselves. The weather was cloudy to start, but the sun came out. I hit more good shots than bad. Carded two birdies, unusual for me. And nearly broke 90. It feels weird to be so consistently close to the 80s when, for the longest time, the 90s seemed an insurmountable task. But lessons, practice, and choosing closer tees has paid off. Golf is fun.

It also helps to find a course that suits my game, which means length and lack of trouble is a plus. The course I like to play has water but none that’s too intimidating, and so little rough and wild areas that most shots, even the errant ones, are easily found. But it’s neither a flat nor boring course. And you still have to hit good shots to get a low score. It’s just that the punishment for bad one shots is less severe. No lost balls, nor easily reached out of bounds.

We finished in time yesterday for a slightly early lunch, and that was nice, too. A quick round with my brother, goodish food (the sandwich bread was toasted but cold), and then an easy drive home. I’ll play again next week when we head to Big Bend. That should be fun too. We’ll probably play a scramble which means we’ll each hit a shot, take the best one, and continue. It’s a game designed for comradery and to be outside. Admirable goals and something nice to anticipate and a good way to play what might be a challenging course.
