Good Things

This feels a bit like spring. A nice cool morning over wet ground. Of course, June is right around the corner, and we’ve had plenty of hot days. So, I’m guessing this is probably a false positive. Still, it’s nice to walk around on the porches in the chill air looking up at the early morning sky. There’s an orange glow on the horizon as we turn to face the sun, and the quarter moon is big and bright along with Venus, Jupiter, and Mars.

Today marks my liberation from the enforced idleness of my post-operative cataract surgery jail. Of course, I’ll probably wait until after today’s follow-up appointment with my eye doctor to make sure. One thing I know is that my new safety glasses will get a fair amount of use. Although, I’m pretty sure this falls into the category of good intentions, and we all know how those go. There will be a day when the glasses aren’t worn, dirt will get in my eyes, and I will curse my forgetfulness. But that’s tomorrow.

Today, I’m feeling good, with my good eye and cool air. Also, I’ve discovered my Bur oak looks to be full of acorns. Watching them grow will be something. The acorns get as large as golf balls. Naturally, I’ve marked the watching of this process on my list of things to anticipate and appreciate. It’s a list that includes the blooms of the false mallow, the Turks caps, the coral sage, the Barbados cherry, the rock roses, the butterflies that follow, the bees, and the hummingbirds. Of course, there will be disappointments, the acorns might fall early, a plant will fail to bloom, but I’m fairly certain learning to live with those disappointments is the true measure of living. It has something to do with being happy with what you have, and it appears right now I have plenty.
