Grandmother’s House

Well, this weather event is interesting, in that Chinese curse sort of way, may you live in interesting times. All week long I was looking toward today and relief, only to realize last night that we have another round of winter scheduled for today. There will be freezing rain this morning with a chance of snow this afternoon. So, now I’m looking forward to tomorrow when the jet stream decides its had enough of Texas and heads back north. A birthday party postponed. Christmas rescheduled.

If there’s any one positive to be gleaned from this experience the only one I can think of is that I’m happy this isn’t the beginning of something that would last for six months, which is what happens in most of the country north of the old Mason Dixon line every year in about October. Winter comes and this is what you get. For six months. It seems cruel and unusual, although it does explain the phenomenon of winter Texans. This is what they’re escaping.

Of course, there is always the possibility that this will be the new home of the jet stream and that the Gulf Stream has stopped streaming or that the magnetic poles are shifting, which they do every once in a while, although I have no idea what that would mean for weather, if anything. Actually, I think the pole flip has more to do with radiation and that sort of thing. But that seems pretty long term and bigger brains than mine are on that issue. Right now, I’m just longing for temperatures in the 40s, which always seemed cold before this. I may even put on shorts and go outside.
