Another Learning

I had an epiphany yesterday. As I changed the sheets on my bed, I thought perhaps I should change the pillow shams as well. Afterall, they sit there every day collecting dust. So, maybe they should be washed. Luckily, I had another set of pillow shams because I’d bought a set when I bought my new quilt. So, I changed them out and they match the new paint and the new quilt, because, why not. That’s sort of the point. And as I did, it seemed funny and odd that I would decide to do something like that.

But I had a great-aunt who ironed her bed sheets, and even though she married into our family maybe the lesson somehow stuck that bedding was important and worth thinking about. And my late wife also cared about our bedding with flannel sheets for winter and blankets to match the seasons and little throw pillows for the bed. So, maybe the odd thing is that I think it’s odd to think about washing the pillow shams, because maybe it’s something people who know better do as a matter of course. And that’s a good paradigm shift for me.

So, it’s likely I’ve made the classic mistake of thinking I’ve discovered something when it was something people who know better knew all along and I should have known it, too, or at least paid attention when my wife was doing it. But that’s the marital division of labor, I guess. Sort of like cooking, where the meals appeared when I got home from work, and I knew she was doing them but never much looked at how. But while I might still be struggling to feed myself, I’ve got a nice looking bedroom, where I think she’d feel right at home.
