More Odds and Ends
It’s amazing how a cleared patch of ground makes me feel. Good. The area around the gazebo is nearly done. I braved the cold yesterday to get in a bit more work. I filled a wheelbarrow with my digging. Soon I’ll spray some corn gluten on the bare ground to keep new seeds from germinating. Next month we’ll plant two native cherry trees along with some turks caps and shrubs to give the new trees ground cover and a bit of shade.
And my son also laid out some footers for me by the deck so that I can build a new platform for the storage cabinets where we keep the pool supplies. I’m waiting on a pocket hole jig to come so that I can screw the frame together. I’m going to use the lumber I bought by mistake for the new fence. They’re eight foot 2X4s, and I needed ten footers. Not sure how I made that mistake. But I did and this is a nice way to recover. Ultimately it will look like I planned it that way. And you’d never have known if I hadn’t told you.
And mostly I think that’s a real secret to life. Keep your mouth shut. Of course, I’m a writer so it’s hard for me, and I don’t really mind telling tales on myself. And being self-deprecating is appealing as long as you don’t take it to extremes. It’s okay to admit you’re good at something if you’re actually good. I guess that’s where it gets tricky. Maybe that trick is to tally up the people who think you’re good at whatever and hang out with them. That’s worked out for me with my writing and singing and just life in general.
