Nice Times

I pretended I was a working man yesterday. Mowed. Edged. Cleaned up the yard. It was cool and the weeds were tall, but I got it done. Then I watched the big game. This was the first time in a long time for me. I think I’ve noted this before, but somewhere along the way, casual sports watching vanished. It’s nice to have it back, to watch for the little dramas, think about the underdogs, root for someone. I wanted the Chiefs to win. I like Mahomes. I like Kelce. I like Taylor. I even like Purdy, but his time will come.

The theme for me was that they’re all nice people. They treat people well. It makes me feel good watching them. And I’m really in the mood these days for nice people in the public space. I want to see players who enjoy the game and respect their peers, I want to see artists who enjoy life and other artists, I want to see people who treat others with respect and dignity. That’s probably a lot to ask these days, and maybe I sound like a Pollyanna, but I try to get that in my daily life. So, if you want a piece of my daily life that’s what I prefer.

Now I get to start thinking about baseball, and I’m glad Altuve is an Astro forever. And maybe this year I’ll get down San Antonio to see the Missions play or maybe head to Round Rock for a game, just to sit in the stands, drink a beer and forget about time. To sit in the welcome embrace of the diamond where a game could literally go on forever, until someone wins. And while I’m at it I’ll remember my days of summer when my young legs could run and there was no ground I couldn’t cover. I think that could be a summer well spent.
