My college team won its opening game this year. Beat our cousins from San Antonio. Although most of my actual cousins from San Antonio are Aggies or Red Raiders. I love that we won, but college football these days seems further and further removed from what it once was although I’m not certain I could actually say what it once was. It’s probably just an old man being an old man. But back in my day the sport just felt more human, and collegiate.

I liked that we brought out the Columbia Blue uniforms to honor the old Oilers. I loved those guys, too. Don’t have the same affection for the current professional squad. In fact, the only professional team I still follow with any diligence is the baseball team. Lots of memories there because I got to Houston the year after the team, and we grew up together. I’ve seen them play in all three of their stadiums and there ought to be a tee-shirt for that. I’m a three stadium fan.

Anyway, my college guys won, and I couldn’t tell you the name of a single player. That seems sad. It’s just that people come and go these days transferring in and out, kids looking for a chance to play for a coach who might love them for a day or two. Of course, it might also be that my tastes have changed. Where once I studied the roster like an astrologist looking at the stars, now days I barely know the name of the next opponent. That might change, since we’re in a new conference with other Texas schools, but that remains to be seen as do most things in my life.
