The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

One Flower
At the base of the big crape myrtle is a flower bed that once was full. That was when the tree was tiny. There was turks caps, salvia greggi, and rock roses. They were abundant. Then the tree grew large.
Tree Thoughts
We’ve had a wet spring and early summer. Everything that likes water is getting water. I’m cautiously optimistic we might make it to fall without losing anything.
Reason to Be
It’s the days of the crape myrtles. They’re all in bloom. Pink petals litter the drive. Everywhere you look there are flowers. White by the back door. Pink in the back garden. Pink in the front, white in the front, purple, too.
Little Miracles
They’re putting out porta-potties along the main drag through town in anticipation of Monday’s solar eclipse. There’s a cache of barricades, too. No idea where those will go.
Trees and Plants
It might be the season of the Crossvine. I planted it last year to grow on the new gazebo. It seemed to prosper, but not flourish. Then winter came, and I had no idea how it would fare as it died back and seemed to disappear.
Three Bits
I did my tax prep yesterday. I use an accountant. He sends me a booklet. I fill it out. I know people who do their own taxes. But I’m not that smart.
In Pursuit
Finished decorating the Christmas tree yesterday. Wrapped it with gold tinsel garland and hung the ornaments.
Looking Ahead
A front blew through, the air chilled, and all my trees have leafed out. It’s canopy time for my yard. That’s nice. My little trees are juveniles.
Doing
It’s probably time to bring down the cat crates and blankets. Cool weather is beginning to feel like cold weather. Mind you, no one is complaining, but then again, the cats don’t really complain. They just sort of mill around and look at me.
Trying
Lost a limb off one of the big oaks in yesterday’s storm. I’m a little sad. We’ve been babying those trees since the last big drought hit them hard. There is good news, however, you really have to look to see where the limb fell. So, it’s all for the best.
The Story
There’s a lovely chill in the air this morning. Feels like fall. It’s Monday. I had a good weekend. Music every day.
A Question
Life it’s mundane self. This morning, in the dark, I fed the cats, rolled the trash can to the curb, and walked around looking at the trees.

Teamwork
Whole Again
I walk some ground, look at the trees, and everything seems at ease.
A Time Tale
The festooning has started. The icicle lights I bought new in 2019 are hung from the gutters with care.
Garden Lesson
I was out for my pre-dawn walk about, saying goodbye to the night, when a thought came to me. I enjoy walking under the outstretched limbs of my trees.
Teamwork
It’s a wonder what two inches of rain will do for a landscape. Everything softens. New leaves pop out of the trees. The grasses spring forth.
Quiet Time
I meant to go sit in the pool last night. Never did. Don’t know why. It’s funny how you can get an idea early in the day to do something, and when the time comes it just seems like too much trouble.
Lessons
I suppose I should be happy I’m still alive and have things to learn, because there’s only one way to graduate from the school of life.
