The Good Fight

Jim is on the far right. Not a flattering picture, but one I like because he was funny.

Relatively easy drive into Houston yesterday. Hard loss to watch with the Astros. Of course, they’ve never won a game one of the World Series, so hope is not lost. We had our chances and chances were not taken. Today I get to go watch my Houston Cougars play football, then its back to watch game two. Here’s to a better outcome. Sports. It’s funny how we get invested in teams. I’m sure it fills some deep-seated psychological need. No telling what.

I’m staying at the home of my old friend Jim, except Jim is no longer here having passed away about this time last year. I miss him. He was my friend and my constant golf companion. We played almost every other Friday, and if that seems odd it’s because the company where I was doing contract work had every other Friday off. Jim also put together a monthly tournament called the Viagra Challenge. Just a bunch of old guys playing at courses Jim picked. He was a great organizer.

He was also a UH grad and part of a large group of us who had season tickets to watch our boys bash other boys on the gridiron. The remnants of that group are gathered here this weekend. We’re short two who planned on attending because they’re ill. We’ll make do. We always do. We fill in the blanks with our memories of the missing and carry on as best we can. Fighting the good fight. Loving one another and doing our best to make our remaining days as bright as possible.
