Weather Worries

I think we’re in the year of the near miss storm. My phone was alive with alerts yesterday. The sky was alive with lightning and thunder. We heard the booms; we heard the bangs. We watched the sky. We ended up with one-tenth of an inch of rain. It’s been like that all year and most of last year. My heart sinks to think how dry this summer might be.

Luckily, all the trees we’ve planted over the years have developed nice canopies, and the ground around the house is shaded a great deal so the sun has a hard time stealing our ground water. Conversely, it also means a light rain has a hard time reaching the ground. Mostly it serves to wash down the leaves and keep them fresh. And that’s probably a good thing. But the ground stays cool and moist, mostly.

The water situation is why I favor native plants. They know what to do and they do it when the rains come or don’t. And while you might give them an extra drink once in a while, during the days of no rain, there’s no need to fret about it every single day. Mostly, you just get to walk around and watch them do their thing and lend the occasional hand. I think that’s a pretty fair partnership and I’m glad we’re friends. And the wild onions are blooming.
