School Days

Drove to Houston yesterday. Watched the Cougars play football. Drove home. We ate lunch at Tony’s in Sealy on the way and grabbed Taco’s Supreme at Taco Bell on the way home. We lost the football game. I don’t believe it was my fault. I wore a red shirt, red hat, red underwear, and red socks. That’s every talisman I know or have. My best friend, Tommy, of 55 years did same. We doubled up. It’s been a powerful combination in the past. No ju-ju this year though.

A lot of people want to fire our coach. His first two seasons with UH were lousy. His second two were great. This one is lousy, again. Judging from his overall record, at UH and West Viriginia, I’d have to say he’s a mediocre head coach, mediocre meaning he wins more than he loses and mostly finishes in the middle of the pack. But I think that’s what happens to most programs because statistics. There are 133 Division 1 football teams, and they can’t all go undefeated.

Anyway, yesterday was a nice game to watch. We led early, had lots of good plays on offense and defense over the course of the game, and had a chance to win the game late, just as we did against Texas. Other than winning, that seems admirable. And Tommy and I had a great visit coming and going and at the game, and we’ll buy tickets again next year. Why? Because just as in life, you don’t always win, and over the years we’ve made lots of good memories owing to our time together at UH and in the years since. And you never know what tomorrow might bring.
