The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

Book News
No fireworks to speak of yesterday. Mostly I did the one thing I love to do. Read a book. Almost all day.
Quiet Day
I fell into a book yesterday and didn’t come out until dark. What an unexpected pleasure. I guess I should have suspected as much, however. It’s a science fiction book, set way in the future, about a library that deals with all the interstellar alien messages SETI has received.
New Life
It’s too hot to work outside. So, I stayed inside, read a book, and worked on a song I was writing. There was a time when I’d would have never admitted I was writing a song, because it sounded a little pretentious.
Highlights
My shopping excursion went off without a hitch yesterday. Accumulated goods without breaking the bank. Bought two books, two pair of socks, a three in one hair, face, and body wash and hand cream.
Going Shopping
I’m going shopping today. A bookstore. A UPS store. A mall. Maybe a golf superstore. I have to map it out. I want to hit them in some sort of sequence. I’ll even work in a lunch.
Unexpected Pleasures
Sometimes you go into an evening with high expectations and end up with disappointment. Sometimes you go into an evening with no expectations and end up amazingly gratified. Last night was one of the latter nights.
Questions
I’ve been listening to a song recently, If the World Was Ending.
Found Purpose
I watched a movie last night about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary. Actually, it was about two men key to the creation of the dictionary, but without the dictionary there would have been no story. So, for me the OED got the title role.
It’s Not Pretty
I always visit my books on Veterans day, writings about men at war. Granted, I enjoy seeing all the pictures of fresh-faced soldiers, my parents and grandparents included, but they only tell part of the story.
