The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

Hot Dogs
I came to Houston in January, 1963. Shortly thereafter, I was introduced to James Coney Island’s hot dogs by the son of my journalism teacher who felt obligated to introduce me to Houston’s treasures.
School Days
Drove to Houston yesterday. Watched the Cougars play football. Drove home. We ate lunch at Tony’s in Sealy on the way and grabbed Taco’s Supreme at Taco Bell on the way home. We lost the football game. I don’t believe it was my fault.
Rain Trip
Drove to Houston yesterday. Hit a patch of hard rain. It reminded me of the days in Houston when I drove to work in the hard rain. Those were the days when it paid to have lived here a long time and be familiar with the old roads.
The Landing
Drove through parts of Houston yesterday. Traveled up 45 from Sagemont, into downtown, and out again via Interstate 10. Went through areas where I lived a large part of my life.
Two Worlds
Roamed the streets of Pearland yesterday, and Manvel, too. The latter is where we landed after vacating Pasadena in the mid-90s. We rented because we didn’t know how much we’d like country living. Turns out we liked it a lot.
Bright Lights
I love Houston. We’ve been into each other for more than 60 years. It’s a big town with big dreams. The place was always about tomorrow and overcoming the odds.
Uncertainty
Got back from Houston yesterday and the house was clean. It used to mean one of the kids had a party while we were gone.
The City
Ah, Houston. Moved there in 1962. Left in 2009. Sort of. I still went back to work, for a while. Eventually, however, I came to call the Hill Country home. But I doubt it will ever outshine the bayou city.
Arranging Bones
Memories are the skeletons of our lives, the things that build the present. Some are good, some are bad, and some are nothing really at all. And interesting enough, with perspective, they move around.
