The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

Reasons to Be
I’ve had a good weekend. The littlest grandson came for a visit. Slept on the couch. Went with me to hear music. We trekked through Longhorn Cavern. Swam at the city pool. Went shopping. Three times.
Skill Set
Grocery shopping would be okay except for all the people. My heart sinks when the parking lot is full. And it was full yesterday. I knew my trip to pick up a few things would be the victim of the holiday shoppers picking up lots of things.
Keeping It Fresh
It’s sort of strange. The more I do around the house the more there is to do. Which, I guess, is just part of owning a home. There are things to do.
Going Shopping
I’m going shopping today. A bookstore. A UPS store. A mall. Maybe a golf superstore. I have to map it out. I want to hit them in some sort of sequence. I’ll even work in a lunch.
What I Did
I took a friend’s advice yesterday and avoided hard work. I went shopping instead. Actually, I went buying.
What We Did
There is probably of law of physics that speaks to the acceleration of a six year old boy as it relates to his physical proximity to the adult male charged with looking out for him.
Finding My Way
I’m untethered. For two years the poles of my universe alternated between home and a memory care facility down the road in Fredericksburg. I oriented my life to that town, shopping, medicine, everything.
