The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

Dog Tale
I’ve started sleeping with a stuffed animal. It’s a miniature dachshund with the words Be Mine embroidered on it’s side. I have no idea who bought it for whom. Me for my late wife or her for me.
Thankful Words
Wow. I slept the whole night through. Not something I normally do. Feels good though. To go to bed and wake up at the appointed hour. Reminds me of my youth. I don’t get that reminder a lot these days.
Day Care
I usually sleep on my left side. And when my body requires a break, which it often does at night, I switch to the right. And back and forth I go.
The Lesson
I did it. The hose reel came together. The Bluetooth headphones connected. Patience won. And sleep. It is odd to think that at an age when I have little time left, I now appreciate the benefit of taking my time.
Slow Down
It’s late, for me. The sun is well up. Birds are chirping. The day is on. I slept late. Lounged in bed. Didn’t move except to change positions.
Sharing
I went outside to a fine mist this morning. No telling how long it’s been falling. The drive is wet. So is the ground. It might rain all day.
Thought Food
I confess to the onset of laziness. My alarm still goes off at six, but that’s about all it does. These days, I’m just as likely to turn it off and go back to sleep as I am to get up and get going.
Clarity
A big gust of wind woke me up last night. Maybe there was rain, too. The driveway is wet this morning. At any rate, I went back to sleep. Woke up at six. My new alarm time.
The Return
Starfleet command was right to tell me to take some time off after my extended trip to Red River New Mexico. I was tired.
Moonlit Pasture
It is fine to see the neighbor’s pasture at night under the light of the moon, even at a glance.
Beautiful Thing
One, true, beautiful thing. That was my thought last night as I endured another session of trying to stabilize a life destabilized by the death of my wife.
Looking Ahead
I spent much of yesterday morning in the yard and gardens. Mowing, edging, pruning, digging on my knees. I took a long walk into town. At the end of the day, my hands ached, my arms grew sore, I tired.
It Starts
I suppose if one is going on a quest, then getting plenty of rest might be a good first step. Sounds sort of prosaic, but it feels right.
Last Night
I swear. Sometimes I think my body holds a lottery every night to decide which part is going to hurt.
