The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

In Good Time
As I’ve started studying the geology of the lands I hike, I’ve really come to love the size and the scope of the story I see.
Memory Loss
I spent the first week post-surgery on the first floor of my daughter’s house. No driving or stair climbing. Most of my time was dedicated to walking around, sitting, staring at my phone, and sleeping.
Mountains, Again
I’ve been waxing euphoric about mountains the last several days, and I see no reason to stop. Because I enjoy these mountains, the mountains of Big Bend. It’s tempting to say they stole my heart, but it’s more appropriate to say I made a place for them in it.
Memory Lane
It’s that time of year when memories seem to be the focus, especially for me. I made some yesterday.
My Epoch
I think I’ve entered a new epoch in my life, hinging on my hike to the top of Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas. I’d like to call it my Guadalupian Epoch…
One More Thing
Sometimes I pull a thought and an entire sweater unravels. In the last three days I’ve written about the torture of waiting for an answer, the pain of getting something other than what you want, and my technique for dealing with it. I thought I was done, but lo and behold, there’s more.
Time Keeping
I’m in Marathon. In the silence of the morning, I can hear the train whistling its way through town. A long call in the dark night warning the unexpecting.
Timepiece
I recently bought a small painting. It’s a picture of an old barn. I hung it in a bare spot on the wall between my fireplace and my entertainment center.
Sundown
Went to the hills just south of town to watch the sun go down yesterday. There were big clouds all around. I thought they might make for a nice show. They did.
River Walk
Walked along the banks of a river yesterday, down into the canyon it’s been cutting for millions of years. The canyon was impressive.
Time Travel
I have always liked Slaughterhouse Five, Billy Pilgrim and the idea of being unstuck in time. Of course, I realize it’s a work of fiction, but it’s still appealing.
Hiking Log 5
I rediscovered something in Santa Elena Canyon of the Big Bend. I am nothing and I like the solitude.
Trip Log 7
Captain’s Log, Stardate 2022.2.7 Homeward bound. Slowly. Made it to Alamosa. More music.
Garden Lesson
I was out for my pre-dawn walk about, saying goodbye to the night, when a thought came to me. I enjoy walking under the outstretched limbs of my trees.
Another Walk
I did another long walk yesterday. When I got home, I was pooped. Two and half miles with more elevation change than the last trip, probably because I got closer to the river. In addition to being pooped I felt enervated, totally lacking the will to do anything, which is what I did most of the day, nothing.
