The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

A Better Life
To me, this election is about my vision of America. Kind, considerate, gentle, caring.
Dreamland, Again
I slept hard and long last night. It was a night of vivid dreams. I still see the fragments of them this morning. I was busy in the night and my dreams were rich with detail.
Baking
We’re baking. Got up last night about three. This was my second night at home in two weeks. Wandered out into the dark. The porch thermometer said, 85. I went back in and dreamed of snow.
Bright Lights
I love Houston. We’ve been into each other for more than 60 years. It’s a big town with big dreams. The place was always about tomorrow and overcoming the odds.
Tradition
We got an inch of rain last night, my hand is healing nicely, and I’m back in the wordy saddle. It feels as though I got a good night’s sleep. Lots of dreams. I mean seriously, lots of them and really detailed, too, but none worth repeating.
Brain Time
Well, that was interesting. A night of dreams. Literally. I went to sleep, dreamed, woke up and did that four times. Four dreams.
Carrying On
Had three dreams last night. All long. All vivid. None worth recounting here, although I remember them all. They were just me living. Seems a good sign to dream.
End Game, Part 1
I sure have dreamed a lot lately. Usually, they happen in the second half of my nightly sleep, the part that comes after I wake in the middle of the night. I don’t recall dreaming this much in the past.
Another Dream
Went to bed at my normal hour. 9:30. Woke at 12:30, worried I’d never get back to sleep. Got a drink of water. Read a bit of a book. Fell into a sleep so deep that I dreamed.
Dreamland
I had a dream last night. It featured my wife. It was a short. She showed up at an event of an indeterminate nature. I asked how in the world she got there, since I thought she was in a memory care facility.
New Land
You might say I had a dream last night. Or you might say I had a thought in a dreamlike state. At any rate, an idea came to me as I lay in bed.
Dreamland
I’ve been dreaming of my late wife recently. Odd little dreams, here and there. Nothing special or weird. She just shows up.
Dreamland
I traveled a once well-traveled road yesterday.
Windward
Had a dream about my wife and slept right through a thunderstorm last night. In fact, I thought the thunderstorm was part of the dream. Nothing but snippets left this morning.
Dreamland
Dreamed I got laid off. Didn’t seem to bother me. Not sure what the job was or why I got let go. The dream came during a good night’s sleep. I guess it was just the brain’s way of cleaning things up.
