Veterans Memorial

We have a new monument in my small town. A war memorial, courtesy of the Hill Country Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and American Legion Post #352. Actually, it’s the Blanco County Veterans Memorial. It’s basically a plaza  with marble seats people can buy and dedicate to loved ones along with placards celebrating the various branches of the Armed Forces including Space Force. There’s a small piece of art that looks interesting, but I’m not sure it’s enough to draw the crowds. And there are flags because there have to be flags.

My father and his father were both born in my town and thus Blanco County, and they both served in the military. My grandfather was in the 32nd Field Artillery during WWI, and my dad was a corpsman in the Navy during the second great war. I imagine they might qualify to have a brick placed in their honor, and I think I’ll look into that. I’ll also check to see if my dad’s brothers would qualify because while they served in WWII, they weren’t born in the county.

If you’re interested in visiting, the monument is behind the courthouse annex at the corner of Nugent and E. Bluebonnet. It’s an easy walk from my house, less than a mile, and I imagine I’ll trek over to it on my walks through town, because it's peaceful. And my wife was a fervent member of the DAR when she was alive, and I like to think if she had lived she would have been really active in getting the monument done. So, it turns out to be a memorial to a lot of people I loved. Nice.
