The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

Never Too Late
Pro tip. When your big riding mower has trouble starting, check all the electrical connections.
A Small Puzzle
I have to confess. Sometimes, this feels so vain. Constantly talking about everything I see and do.
Summer ‘do
I did it. Got my summer ‘do. Cut my hair. No one from CSNY cares. It was time. I was tired of it getting in my face in my food in my way.
Sweet Deal
It rained again last night, or maybe early this morning. Anyway, right now the sun is out, and as I stood in the drive admiring the cool air, a breeze blew through. It ruffled the thick foliage of the crape myrtle and lacy oaks, and as it did, little rain showers descended from each of the trees, backlit by the morning sun.
Thirty Gallons
Tuesday mornings. Make coffee, feed the cats, take out the trash. Sometimes its garbage. Today it was trash.
Circle of Life
Hooray for the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks for all the water. Got a good bit yesterday. My gauges are at an inch and a half since Saturday morning. It looks thought we’re in for another dosing today.
End of the Drive
What used to be a long look at a wide expanse of pasture is now a short view of trees with the pasture visible only in spots between them. That’s okay. It’s part of the general feeling of the house as it becomes engulfed in trees all around. We’re disappearing.
Eighth Place
Yesterday, my granddaughter ran the third leg of her team’s 4 X 400-meter relay in our regional track meet on the way to state. She took the baton in sixth place out of eight runners.
The Gift, Part 2
…I believe I prefer the more imprecise approach of lumping decades together and thinking, yeah, I felt good then in a general sense…
Old Friend
I forgot to take out the trash yesterday. That never happened when my wife was alive. Even when her brain went wonky, the schedule was still there.
Tiny Things
Had a fine day yesterday. Wrote a bit. Did some website work. Played a little golf.
How Happy Feels
Here we are. Another day another dollar. Can’t tell whether the latter is coming or going. Probably going. That pretty much defines retirement and fixed incomes.
