The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

When to Mow
It’s a lovely day in the neighborhood. We have clouds, which means the morning sun can give us a show, and it did so. I spooked a small herd of deer when I walked out my gate to get a better look.
Memory Tricks
I love summer. I got home yesterday following lunch and an afternoon of music with time to mow. So, I did. I changed into my work clothes and fired up the zero turn mower.
Springy Things
I had a talk with the machine yesterday. Here’s how it went. I took the cowling off the gas tank. Disconnected the two fuel lines. Blew into one of them to clear any debris. Reconnected the lines. Turned the starter. Fuel flowed into the filter.
Busy Work
I’ve been on a break. And like any program, it pays to start off slow when you’re getting back into the routine. So, no reminiscing today.
Home Again
Home. The grass needed mowing. I mowed. All else seems in good order. The rain gauge stands at an inch and two tenths. The Crossvine I planted this spring is blooming on the trellis. Lots of promise there.
Thought Control
I guess it’s true. Into each life a little rain must fall. Some fell into mine yesterday. Not the metaphorical sad kind. But the literal, real kind.
Tidbits
The swallows are returning. There are birds on two of the old nests on the front porch. I cleaned out all the nest sites in the garage and sprayed with peppermint oil. I can do without their mess in the garage. We’ll see if I succeed in deterring them.
Feeling Good
Ah, these mornings. Cool with a hint of moisture. Green grass. Sweet days. There was rain around yesterday, but none fell on me. But that’s okay as long as it fell somewhere in the neighborhood.
Weeds
I labored on Labor Day. Mowed the back lots, mowed the front, and had a good ole time. I pulled weeds. Got my hands dirty. Got down on my knees. Raised a sweat.
Energized
Yard work is nearly bearable when the weather is cool, and it was cool yesterday.
Standing Up
It feels strange sitting down to write at 11:30 when I normally wrap things up by 6:30 or seven, but here we are, nearly noon.
A Hint of Rain
There appears to be moisture in the air this morning and the garage apron looks wet. I’m not going to dignify it and say its rain. Although, we need rain, and it would be nice if some would come.
