The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

Late in the Day
Summer golf means early tee-times which also means early times for leaving the house. Today it was a 7:15 start at Delaware Springs in Burnet. We left my house at 6, which meant no time for the daily words even thought I got up at 4:30 to eat and get ready.
Random Words
I’ve been up and doing things this morning now I’m writing. Sort of a backwards start to the day, but why should every day start the same way.
Shelves and Songs
Had a good day yesterday. Bought some shelving to use for my garage storage. I’d been looking at cabinets with doors, but that’s pretty much an invitation to critters of all sorts to call the place home as I discovered with my old wooden cabinets.
The Doctor
Drove into Houston yesterday to visit my ENT specialist. A persistent cough was proving troublesome. The visit lasted less than 20 minutes.
Car Thoughts
I skipped my morning essay yesterday because we left at 6:15 to go play golf. Nice time of day to do that. Got the round in under four hours, ate a nice lunch, and came on home.
What’s That?
A brief laugh at yourself story. Last night as I prepared for bed, I heard what I thought was a soft barking sound, maybe a distress call from some unidentified animal.
Nice Things
We moved into our house in December 2009. It was brand new. Now, nearly 13 years later it’s starting to look a little frayed around the edges.
I Have Mail
I long ago quite watching my emails as though I was getting nuggets of gold. Mostly, I was getting told about things I needed to do. When I retired that stopped.
End Game, Part 2
I slept right through my alarm this morning. It seems an odd thing for a retired guy to say, but it’s true. I set my alarm for 5:30 because I enjoy the morning. The dark then the light.
End Game, Part 1
I sure have dreamed a lot lately. Usually, they happen in the second half of my nightly sleep, the part that comes after I wake in the middle of the night. I don’t recall dreaming this much in the past.
The Birthday
Good morning. I had good day yesterday. Over the course of the day my spirits steadily rose. Good old Facebook contributed its avalanche of birthday greetings.
Feels Like Love
I was going to give myself the day off for my birthday. So, I slept in, loitering beneath the warm sheets. Then I got up, made a cup of coffee, and the next thing you know I’m sitting here in front of the computer, trying not to slouch, and starting to write.
