The Caregiver’s Tales
Tiny essays on life, nature, grief and other things that catch my fancy in the Texas Hill Country. Here’s how it all got started.

The Gift
Made music with friends yesterday. The best way to make music. And there were friends there to listen, too. And two of my cousins showed up, and that was special.
Dad
Yesterday was Father’s Day. My oldest son called. My youngest son popped in with best wishes. And my daughter and her two arrived on the way to summer camp with a pair of socks for me declaring me a cool ass grandpa.
In and Out
It’s back to my mini memoir. So far it feels pretty ragged. I’ve talked about World War II and religion. There will be more on those later. Right now, it’s time for family. I’m the oldest of four boys. What I remember about my childhood is moving a lot and always being the new kid. For an additional bit of spice, my ears protruded.
Memorial Days
It’s a melancholy weekend. Memorial Day. For ages it was our time at the river. The Nueces. We’d go with family and friends.
Picking
Played a little music last night. My wife’s cousin invited us to perform at their RV rally just up the road in Stonewall. We obliged.
Secret Sauce
I never realized how much I missed it until I had it again. Sharing. The coming home from work and school to tell what you did, to hear what others did.
The End
In the beginning there soon came the middle and after that the end and this is the end of our trip.
What I Know
I have to admit. As stories go, mine is pretty boring, especially these days. My big activity yesterday was golf with friends.
Another Goodbye
The odd thing about funerals is that sometimes it’s the only place you get to see all of your family together. It happened that way Saturday as we marked the passing of my brother-in-law.
Big Day
Good morning. Word of warning. I’m infused with gratitude today, and I feel blessed and sort of gushy. So, if I see you, you’re liable to get a big hug, a thank you, and I love you.
Family Time
Went to a multigenerational birthday party this past Saturday. I was a guest of the musician hired to sing songs to the patriarch. He was turning 90.
Food and Friends
I had a lazy day yesterday. Mostly it involved food. Hooked up with old friends from Houston. Drove to a fine Italian restaurant down by canyon lake. Ate a long leisurely lunch with dessert because every great meal needs to be topped off.
Road Noise
Here I am again, writing away from home. It’s okay, though. I’m at the home of my eldest.
Things Big and Small
Lots of things running around in my head these days, some pleasant, some not so. This one is pretty ordinary and might be considered a late in life thought.
The Hiccup
I’ve had a series of spirit lifting days, mostly filled with music, satisfying work, and good company.
Tiny Things
Had a fine day yesterday. Wrote a bit. Did some website work. Played a little golf.
